There is a design philosophy that I follow called Honest Design. It’s about embracing the beauty of imperfection and transparently honouring the work’s material, function, and history. I stand behind this whole heartedly, so I started to wonder how I could apply this approach to painting. Throughout this series, HONEST PAINTING I find myself fighting against my own impulses manifested by social media: the need for perfection and the need to present perfection to others. EVERGREEN was created in two moments using acrylic paint & oil pastel and inspired by the practice of painting the Ensō. An Ensō, meaning circle in Japanese is a meditation practice about capturing exactly where you’re at, in that moment. Each expression is made with no room for adding on or fixing up, forcing me to embrace the beauty of imperfection.
